How Phoenix Zoo Built an Endangered Species Monitoring Network with OWL

Using OWL’s mesh networking hardware and cloud tools, Phoenix Zoo and its partners deployed an AI-powered acoustic monitoring network to detect endangered Three-wattled Bellbirds in Costa Rica. In collaboration with ProCAT Costa Rica and Arizona State University, the Phoenix Zoo leveraged OWL’s DuckLink hardware to build a field-ready solution for tracking the elusive bellbird in remote rainforest terrain. The initial deployment of 10 solar-powered, ML-enabled nodes in January 2025 proved the system’s durability and accuracy, as well as the Bellbird's existence in this region.
